Installing the Guestbook Script
Guestbook allows you to set up your own comments page. From there, visitors can add
entries to your guestbook and they will be displayed with the most recent at the top and
scrolling down or vice versa. Other options include the ability to limit HTML in the
entry, link to e-mail address with mailto tag, use a log to log entries, redirect to a
different page after signing, e-mailing whenever a new entry is added and much more.
Note for FrontPage users:
You do not need to use this script, although you may use it, if you wish.
You
can also use the FrontPage Discussion Web Template.
There are two ways to install the Guestbook script:
- You may run the installation script at the prompt after you telnet to your site (this is
the easy way). Please see below.
- You may download the script from the Matt's Script Archive website and install all the
files (this is the harder way):
http://www.worldwidemart.com/scripts/guestbook.shtml
If you require help troubleshooting a customized guestbook, please
contact our sales office regarding custom programming pricing.
Running the Installation Script:
To run the installation script, you will need to connect to your site via telnet. The telnet prompt should look like this example:
www#:/mnt/web/guide/YOURDOMAIN#
Now type the following command:
makeguest
Follow the prompts. If you wish to overwrite your current guestbook and start again
blank, hit enter when prompted for a directory name. This is a great way to reset your
guestbook should any programming changes you make not work correctly. If you wish to
install multiple guestbooks, just give each one a unique directory name. Please note that
if you do not wish to reset your guestbook and would like us to custom trouble-shoot the
guestbook you are customizing, additional programming charges may be applied to your
account.
If you would like your guestbook to send you email notification every time someone
signs your guestbook, enter your email address when prompted. If you hit enter without
typing an email address, your guestbook will simply skip the email part.
After the installation script finishes, you may customize the files to your delight.
It is that simple!
