Windows 95/98 TCP/IP

Goodbye 16bit dialers - Do Not Use:

1.        Custom Connect dialer in the Netmanage Chameleon software.
2.        Trumpet Winsock dialer in the SVC Internet Valet software.
3.        Frontier dialer in the Frontier SuperHighway software.
4.        Quarterdeck dialer in the Quarterdeck Internet Suite software.
5.        SPRY dialer in the Internet In A Box software.
 

Have the Windows 95 CD or Disks handy for the following procedures.

[STEP I] : Dial-Up Networking

Double click the My computer icon to see whether Dial-Up Networking is installed.
If it is, skip to [STEP II]. If not, please continue.

1.        Click Start
2.        Select Settings  
3.        Select Control Panel
4.        Select the Add/Remove Properties icon.  The Add/Remove Program Properties sheet appears.
5.        Click the Windows Setup tab.
6.        Select the Communications option.
7.        Click the Details button.
8.        Select the Dial-Up Networking option.
9.        Click OK in the Communications dialog box.
10.       Click OK in the Ad/Remove Programs Properties sheet to complete the installation.
For further assistance…turn to page 56 of your Introducing Windows 95 paperback handbook.  It provides the instructions on how to install the Dial-Up Networking Software off your Windows 95 CD/Disks.

[STEP II] : Checking for Multiple Winsock.dll’s
1.        Click Start
2.        Click Find
3.        Select Files of Folders
4.        Type: winsock.dll (in the Named Box)
5.        Make sure Look In is set to c:\
6.        Click Find Now
You should have ONE winsock.dll in the \windows directory.  Chameleon’s, Trumpet’s, Explore’s, CompuServe’s, Netcom’s, etc. winsock.dll should be renamed winsock.old.  More than ONE winsock.dll on your hard drive will lead to problems in resolving hostnames.  The Windows winsock.dll will equal 42K in size.  Make sure it is the correct one!

[STEP III] : Network

Add the following network components if you have not done so already.  You may be prompted for Windows 95 CD/Disks after each addition.
1.        Click Start
2.        Select Settings
3.        Select Control Panel     
4.        Double-Click the Network Icon
Client For Microsoft Networks - If not in installed box:
1.        Click on Add
2.        Double-Click on Client
3.        Click on Microsoft
4.        Click on Client For Microsoft Networks   
5.        Click OK
Dial-Up Adapter - If not in installed box:
1.        Click on Add
2.        Double-Click on Adapter
3.        Click on Microsoft
4.        Click on Dial-Up Adapter
5.        Click OK
TCP/IP - If not in installed box:
1.        Click on Add
2.        Double-Click on Protocol
3.        Click on Microsoft
4.        Click on TCP/IP
5.        Click OK
The network dialog box should now contain: Client For Microsoft Networks, Dial-Up Adapter, TCP/IP
1.        Select Dial-Up Adapter
2.        Click Properties         
3.        Select Bindings
4.        Make sure the TCP/IP box is checked.
5.        Click OK
6.        Click OK
Windows ’95 may prompt you to restart the system.  After restart, proceed to the next step.

[STEP IV] : Setting Up a XyNexT Access Icon
1.        Double-Click My Computer
2.        Double-Click Dial-Up Networking
3.        Double-Click on Make A New Connection
4.        Enter XyNexT as the name of the computer you will be dialing into.
5.        Click Next
6.        Enter the XyNexT Area Code (if needed), phone number, and Country Code you will be dialing into.
7.        Click Next, then Finish
8.        You will then have an new icon in the Dial-Up Networking window with the name XyNexT.
[STEP V] : Server Information for the XyNexT Icon
1.        In Dial-Up Networking, highlight the XyNexT icon
2.        Select File/Properties
3.        Click the Server Type button
4.        Type of Dial-Up Server, Select “PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT, Internet”
5.        Advanced Options.
1.        “Log on to network” should be unchecked
2.        “Enable software compression” can be checked
3.        “Require encryted password” should be unchecked
6.        Allow network protocols:
1.        “NetBEUI” should be unchecked
2.        “IPX/SPX” should be unchecked
3.        “TCP/IP” must be CHECKED
7.        Click on TCP/IP Settings:
1.        Select “Server assigned IP Address”
2.        Select “Specify name server addresses”
3.        Enter 209.235.31.149 as the Primary DNS & Enter 209.196.60.253 as the Secondary DNS.
4.        Leave the Primary & Secondary WINS at 0.0.0.0
5.        “Use IP header compression” can be checked
6.        “Use default gateway on remote network” must be checked
8.        Click OK/ Click OK/ Click OK
9.        Double-Click the XyNexT icon
10.       Enter your XyNexT username and password
11.       Click Connect
After setting up your Windows 95 dialer, you should use the XyNexT icon to dial XyNexT’s service.
